Bill Burton, a White House spokesman said the First Family were “having a great time”, enjoying playing games and reading as Martha’s Vineyard was hit by wind and rain.

“I’ve heard reports of Taboo and Scrabble being played. And this will probably get me fired, but I know that Valerie did not do so well in Scrabble against the president,” he said, referring to Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

“They’re also watching some movies, reading some books and getting some good downtime, spending time with each other,” he added.

On Monday evening, Mr Obama, his wife Michelle, and three friends dined at a French-owned restaurant – only the second public outing since they arrived on the smart Massachusetts vacation spot last Thursday.

The Obamas are renting Blue Heron Farm on the island for the second consecutive year. On Friday, the US president took his girls Sasha and Malia to a book store in the main port, Vineyard Haven.

The rain has kept Mr Obama’s golf outings down to just two and – unable to play basketball on a court at the farm – he took friends and White House staffers for a game on Monday at a school gymnasium in nearby Oak Bluffs.

The vacation wraps up on Sunday, when Mr Obama is due to head down to New Orleans to mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,500 people in one of the nation’s worst ever natural disasters.

Bad weather is forecast again for Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday but is due to gradually improve before the weekend.
