Obama Orders End of Guantanamo, CIA Prision, & War on Terror
On his first full day in office, in addition to funding foreign abortions with American tax dollars, Obama also issued the executive order to close Guantanmo Bay within a year, close an overseas CIA prison and to stop enhanced interrogation techniques such as waterboarding.
I see this move as nothing but a political move to fulfill his promise of change to his mindless obamanazi zombie followers. It is really completely unnecessary, hasn’t been thought out and is now only causing problems. Namely, what do we do with the prisoners? We can either release them or move them, which, to me, seems more troublesome, dangerous and expensive than just keeping them where they are. Governors are already expressing concern about the possibility of the foreign prisoners being transferred to their states, such as Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius saying, “My preliminary reaction is that Fort Leavenworth is not properly equipped to safely detain these foreign prisoners, and the input from local legislators and community leaders indicates a high level of concern about the impact on the community and the existing federal facilities.”
Furthermore, think of the trouble it will be to keep all of these terrorist prisoners in a prison full of American criminals. Many of these men were involved or are thought to have been involved with the attacks on September 11, 2001. They won’t last a second in any other prison! Think of the trouble and cost to keep them segregated and protected. (On the other hand, maybe it would be best to throw them all in Sing Sing prision in New York and say, “Good luck! You mess with New York, they’ll mess with you!”)
There is also the possibility of releasing many of those being held in Gitmo. We already know that at least 61 prisoners released under the Bush administration have already returned to terrorism.
The Pentagon said on Tuesday that 61 former detainees from its military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, appear to have returned to terrorism since their release from custody. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said 18 former detainees are confirmed and 43 suspected of “returning to the fight.” He said the figures, updated at the end of December, showed a higher rate of recidivism than seen in a previous report showing 37 former detainees as active militants. He provided no details about the detainees or their countries of origin. “The overall known terrorist re-engagement rate has increased to 11 percent” from about 7 percent, Morrell said. The numbers were generated by the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency based on fingerprints, photographs and intelligence reports, he said. President-elect Barack Obama, who takes office on Tuesday, is expected to issue an executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay prison, possibly within his first week in office. About 255 men are still held at the U.S.-run naval base in Cuba, a symbol of aggressive interrogation methods that exposed the United States to allegations of torture. Washington has cleared 50 of the detainees for release but cannot return them to their home countries because of the risk they would be tortured or persecuted there. Around 500 others have been freed or transferred to other governments since 2002. Pentagon officials say scores of detainees still in custody should never be released because of the potential danger they pose to U.S. interests. [link]
The libs are also teeming in delight that Obama has seemingly overnight “ended the war on terror.” Wow, that was easy! No more terrorism! I don’t even know how to comment on this. This just goes to prove that liberals run on pure emotion. Here’s a bit from the Washington Post:
Bush’s ‘War’ On Terror Comes to a Sudden End
President Obama yesterday eliminated the most controversial tools employed by his predecessor against terrorism suspects. With the stroke of his pen, he effectively declared an end to the “war on terror,” as President George W. Bush had defined it, signaling to the world that the reach of the U.S. government in battling its enemies will not be limitless.
What a freaking great idea!! Instead, let’s signal the world that we do have limits when battling our enemies! Keep trying and we’ll give in eventually. Anyone willing to push our limits can beat us!
…And in a broad swipe at the Bush administration’s lawyers, Obama nullified every legal order and opinion on interrogations issued by any lawyer in the executive branch after Sept. 11, 2001.
Wow.
That pretty much tells you everything you need to know about our new president. Any shred of respect I still had for Barack Obama just got thrown out the window. Obama has acted with no respect for the actions taken to keep this country safe after the attacks on September 11, putting his own petty grudges and desire to be loved by the left ahead of the safety and lives of the American citizen. To me, Obama has just flipped off the famlies of the victims of September 11 with a smirk on his face. There are some people who voted for Obama only because they bought into the hype or trusted the filtered bias of the mainstream media, who would be shocked at this news (if they ever hear it in its full and proper context) and wonder why they had no warning. Well the warning was there. HumanEvents.com had this to say back in August:
Analyzing an Obama speech at the same time that Biden was denying the existence of the war on terror, a Washington Post editorial noted that the candidate “does not use the phrase ‘war on terrorism.’ More remarkably, he doesn’t mention Islam, much less Islamic extremism — which Mr. Bush has described as a critical ideological threat to freedom inside and outside the Muslim world.”
…Obama and Biden, once ensconced in the White House, would thus revert to the Clinton-era policy of seeing each front in the global jihad as a discrete liberation struggle to be bought off by the right aid package. Several weeks ago, CNN aired an interview with Obama in which the candidate expressed the opinion that Islamic jihad is a result of U.S. foreign policy failure. He blamed global jihadist activity on poverty — a popular correlation that has been disproved by numerous studies (quick: how many Haitian terrorists can you name?). But of course it is also the West’s fault: Obama asserted that “there has been a shift in Islam that I believe is connected to the failures of governments and the failures of the West to work with many of these countries, in order to make sure that opportunities are there, that there’s bottom-up economic growth.”
So according to Obama, the “shift in Islam” doesn’t have anything to do — or anything significant to do — with imperatives within Islam itself, or with changes in conditions in the Islamic world that have allowed for a resurgence of the jihad ideology. That resurgence is all because of the “failures of the West to work with many of these countries” — although we are pouring billions into Egypt and Pakistan and they are still hotbeds of jihadist sentiment.
…Although he continues to campaign under a mantra of “change,” so far Obama is offering more of the same in a field where genuine, informed and careful change is needed more than ever. Neither Obama nor Biden show any sign of being aware of the global jihad agenda, and has to my knowledge never said anything about the jihad or Islamic supremacism.
When Biden says that we have to identify the enemy, he apparently means that we have to define them as various insurgent and nationalist movements, and find the right mix of concessions and aid to offer them in order to pacify them. Given the Islamic jihad agenda, of course, this is short-sighted, and time and events will demonstrate just how short-sighted the Obama-Biden ticket’s policy really is.
UPDATE: I keep hearing from the libs that this was a smart move simply because Guantanmo is an “embarassment” for the United States with countries around the world. I’m glad we’ve decided to put our public image and popularity before national security and logic, and at no cost. Seems we’re now limiting ourselves when it comes to security and defense, but we’ll pay any price to be popular!
