“Anatomy of a World Leader” – Creepy
A painting from AlexGrey.com. Here is what the artist says about the piece, with my emphasis added:
“After hearing Barack Obama’s speech in BerIin, and noting the degree of excitement and hope that he generated throughout many countries besides the US, I started to see him as one of the first true ‘world leaders.’ This may be partly because of his extraordinary childhood and political life that has bridged many cultures. Obama’s restraint and intelligence, exhibited as foes were bating him throughout the campaign, his heartful clarity coming through in his talks are all qualities of a highly evolved person.
We need to consider our planetary citizenship, because solving the world’s ecological and economic problems, and creating a culture of peace and reconciliation will require the co-operation of all nations.
Perhaps you can use this symbol of Barack Obama to send him a prayer of support, to send all the loving hopeful healing and creative energy that we can focus on him so that he can perform the task of leadership in the most effective and powerful way for the greatest good, for the greatest number.”
The word “creepy” comes to mind. Where were all the hippies and free-lovers suggesting sending “loving hopeful healing and creative energy that we can focus on” President Bush so that he could perform effectively? If the libs were so concerned with Bush, maybe they should have tried this method instead of bashing and ridiculing him. And I am all for saying a prayer for a person (trust me, I’ve been praying for Obama that he might actually do what is in the country’s best interests) but I don’t like this guy’s wording of “sending him a prayer of support.” As a Christian, I send my prayers to God alone. I know what the guy’s point is, but still, it’s the little things like this that accumulate into a counter-culture mindset.
Here is a critique of the artwork from my wife, who is an artist:
The 3rd eye is indicative of enlightenment. This is basically placing Obama as synonymous with the prophets and gurus of total peace and ‘completeness’ with the cosmic energies. The ‘aura’ surrounding him is usually gold/ neutrals, which traditionally depict the levels of awareness that concentrically converge into the cosmic heavens. I interpret this as: Obama has conquered and overcome the outer regions of existence (aka United States, red white and blue with stars). His light shines outward, overpowering the outer regions in its glory. He has achieved total enlightenment, we know this by the presence of the third eye, and the halo of celestial gold about his head, and is now a prophet of all that is good and true; we should emulate him in all ways, and follow his advice since he has achieved the upmost level of existence. The ‘eye’ by the way, is the earth, which can symbolize universal truth in his thoughts and insight. I believe the artist simply wanted to portray his Obama as a world leader and enlightened entity capable of showing us the ‘true path’, but I it still scares me in its subliminal implications.

I think he meant that we should just pray that he does right by the people. Wouldnt God only want our leader to so right by us? Its not bad, its good. Alex Gery is a very spiritual man, no harm by it. What you see as subliminal others see with different eyes because our opinions on the man himself differ. I don’t belive Obama wants to be anything more than a good president. Try not to be cynical about it. I belive Mc Cain would have tried his best too…But you have to really admit one thing, its a dynamic painting regardless of the meaning. the fact that it made you have an uncomfortable feeling shows what value this painting has.
I don’t think there’s anything “subliminal” about it… it’s quite clear, and he makes it quite clear in his critique of his work… you didn’t get anything like this from the art world for Bush, no prayers or “loving hopeful healing and creative energy.” Instead the art world had things like this to say about Bush:

Furthermore, Alex Grey interprets part of his 1989 painting “Gaia,” as being George Bush, in Grey’s own words, “surrounded by a d*ck and what could be a terrorist”…
